Find the right niche for you

Last Updated on December 7, 2022

I will cut the fluff and go right to what needs to be done! The first step to starting your affiliate blog is choosing a niche.

What is a niche in marketing?

A niche is nothing more than a group of people with the same interests/passions on a specific subject.

In this case study, the website I will be building alongside you is about fishing.

Remember, to succeed and to actually enjoy the process (and get there faster), and you should have at least an interest in the niche you are about to choose.

Don’t go just after the numbers because someone told you it was a profitable one!

How to find the right niche for you?

Grab a piece of paper and a pen! Before you ask, I’ll answer… NO! It cant be a notepad, phone, or tablet!

Write down all your interest, experiences (good or bad), sports you practiced in the past, jobs, courses, etc.

The idea here is to make a list that we can narrow down!

(sorry for my handwriting… way too much time on the computer)

Ok, time to translate that mess!

What lead me to choose fishing over all other options?

The idea of this case study is to share every step by step, the do’s, the don’ts, and the why’s.

Five solid reasons led me to choose fishing.

  1. I wanted to make a new website about one of my hobbies, so I discarded everything in the experience and health tab.
  2. I was fishing as way more interest over time, so it was a no-brainer. I will show you below how I got to this conclusion.
  3. At first glance, there are more ways to monetize it.
  4. It can be narrowed down at first and expanded later.
  5. I “really” enjoy fishing, and because it’s a new hobby, researching for content won’t be tedious but exciting.

What should you look for when deciding on your niche?

If you get a list now, great! If not, make it!!!

If you are new to affiliate marketing and have any of these niches on your list… cut them off immediately!

🛑Niches to avoid as a beginner

  • Weight loss
  • Fitness
  • Make money online
  • SEO
  • Fashion
  • Health-related

(pretty sure I’m missing something)

You can always try them later down the road, but if you starting out, you should search for more specific niches.

Follow my reasoning.

Let’s say you are thinking of music as a niche, but what do you like about music?

Do you like to sing? You like to hear music, what type of music? Classical?

Oh, you like instruments, but what instruments? Blow instruments, chord instruments, percussion?

See my point? Music is way too broad, and narrowing it down to musical instruments is not enough.

Stay with me…

What about Piano for toddlers? It might be too narrow, right?

Music for children seems about right; let’s check.

We need to find the sweet spot between too broad and too narrow.

Time to look at GOOGLE TRENDS

Google trends comparison

In this first comparison, we can see that trends in the piano for kids and music for children are decent enough for interest over time.

Piano for toddlers has no data, so let’s assume it is not worth the trouble of pursuing that niche.

I need your attention now!

Check the related queries on this keyword.

  • simply piano (it’s a piano app)
  • best keyboard for child to learn piano (buyers intent keyword)
  • guitar lessons near me
  • piano lesson for kids near me

Some related queries are good enough for building content for a niche website. PLUS…..

➡️You even got a breakout keyword for a best-of-review post!?

keywords trending for music for children

Let’s check the “music for children” keyword trends.

Right off the bat, we can see that the related keywords/keyword intent is about types of music.

The interest in this subject is finding relaxing music for kids/ babies to help them sleep instead of learning how to play an instrument.

It seems more challenging to create regular content and monetize from this niche, so If I had to choose, I would go with the first option.

This is just one example of how you can choose a niche. You can find links to more detailed information in the Resources section at the bottom of this page.
